A complete guide to preparing for the move
Moving can be one of the most stressful moments in life, but with careful preparation, it can be managed stress-free. Moving can be difficult, but with good preparation and organization, you can handle it like a pro. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to manage moving to a new home efficiently and stress-free.
1. Planning and preparation
- Start early: It is best to start preparations at least a month before the planned move. Create a time plan where you divide individual tasks into specific days and weeks. Get packing materials: Get enough boxes of different sizes, packing tape, bubble wrap and fixing materials. Don't forget the markers to mark the boxes.
2. Organization and packaging
- Room-by-room packing: Room-by-room packing is efficient and helps maintain order. Label the boxes with the name of the room and a brief description of the contents so they are easy to find when unpacking.
- Important things separately: Pack things that you will need immediately after arriving in your new home in separate boxes and mark them with a distinctive sticker that says "first to unpack". This includes, for example, bed linen, basic kitchen utensils and personal hygiene items.
- Get rid of unnecessary things: Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of things you no longer need. Donate, sell or recycle things you don't use. Use different groups on social networks. There are also companies and organizations like Let's Give Things a Second Chance, where you can take your unnecessary things and they will sell them for you at a nominal price.
3. Logistics and communication
- Book a moving company: If you plan to use moving services, contact the moving company in advance and agree on an exact date. Check their references and make sure they have insurance..
4. Mooving day
- Be prepared: On moving day, have everything packed and ready to go. Heavy furniture is usually moved first, followed by all personal belongings. It is better to move the flowers in your car or keep them in boxes where they will be safely secured. Have snacks and water on hand for yourself and the moving company's workers.
- Checklist: Use a checklist to make sure nothing is forgotten. Check all rooms, closets and storage areas.
- Important documents: Keep all important documents such as contracts, birth certificates, passports and other personal documents in one place and with you.
5. Upon arrival at the new home
- Unpacking according to priorities: Start by unpacking the boxes marked "first to unpack". Work your way up to the next boxes by room and importance.
- Check your inventory: If you are being moved by a moving company, make sure that everything has arrived in order and that nothing is missing. If you have damaged items, contact the moving company and claim a refund.
- Furnishing and Comfort: Set up your home appliances, arrange basic furniture and make your new home comfortable. Don't forget the little things that will help you feel at home.
6. Inform important institutions
- Don't forget to inform: your employer, your children's school, doctor, bank and other important institutions about your change of address. Also update your address in all necessary places, such as subscription services or online stores.
